ICYMI: Skrillex just dropped two albums in two days
Written by Mike Nicholas on February 19, 2023
Incase you missed it, Skrillex dropped two albums in two days over the weekend – after almost a decade since his last album. While going against all of the current norms of releasing music in 2023, fair to say an exciting weekend for any electronic music fan.
Quest For Fire revealed a bunch of highly-anticipated IDs and experimental tracks crossing into many different sub genres and sounds, but staying true to that recognisable Skrillex sound in one way or another. One track even includes a sample from the Lizzie McGuire Movie!
QFF solidifies Skrillex’s role as a continual pioneer and innovator in electronic music – the almost decade wait was well worth it.
The surprise of the weekend came in the shock release of album number two, Don’t Get Too Close featuring a number of long awaited collabs including Justin Bieber, Kid Cudi, Swae Lee & more. This album definitely leans more into his hip hop production (and a little bit of DNB on ‘Mixed Signals’) but with plenty of electronic elements crossing over.
This second album release came right as Skrillex was playing one of two historic gigs with Fred Again & Four Tet at Madison Square Garden. The day before they played a wild b2b2b on a school bus in the Middle of Times Square in NYC (watch below).
2023 proving to be the year of Skrillex – now all we need is a Skrillex, Fred Again & Four Tet supergroup.
